INSURANCE COST IS DRIVING YOUNG PEOPLE OFF THE ROADS

High insurance costs are being blamed as new figures show fewer younger people are taking to the roads.

Statistics provided by the Department of Transport show a drop over the past decade in the number of those aged between 17 and 20 looking to get their ‘L’ plates.

Student unions say insurance premiums are being pushed out of reach of those facing other high costs, like college accommodation.

The AA’s Conor Faughnan says it can seem very unfair for those learning to drive.
