MASS GRAVES OF 1,500 REBELS FROM 1798 UNCOVERED AT VINEGAR HILL

A number of mass graves have been located on Vinegar Hill outside Enniscorthy.

The discovery was made under work being carried under the Vinegar Hill Research Project.

The mass grave of around 1,500 victims of the 1798 Rising has been identified as a result of geophysical investigations of the site.

There are no plans to disturb the burial site of the mainly non armed rebels who were killed during the insurrection.

Meanwhile the current state of Vinegar Hill came in for sharp criticism at yesterday’s meeting of Wexford County Council.

Gateway workers who were employed to look after the site were let go allowing the site to go into a neglected state.

Councillor Paddy Kavanagh called on his colleagues to put a plan in place to restore Vinegar Hill to it’s former glory.
