MCCOLLUM TO BE TRANSFERED TO NORTHERN IRELAND FROM PERU PRISON

The Northern Ireland Prison Service has received papers for Michaela McCollum Connolly to transfer home to serve out her prison sentence for drugs smuggling.

The 20-year-old was jailed in Peru for six years for attempting to smuggle 1.8 million euro worth of cocaine, found in her luggage at Lima airport last summer.

She pleaded guilty alongside her co-accused Melissa Reid from Scotland.

It is understood the transfer request will be dealt with as quickly as possible.

Claire Graham, reporter with Citybeat radio in Belfast, says it is unclear whether Michaela’s transfer will be subject to specific conditions.

“At this stage those details aren’t clear as of yet – but we do know there were strict sentencing proposed before she was initially given that 6 years and 8 months” she said.

“Peru did want really harsh lessons to be learnt for the Peru Two, as they were called”.

“We’ll just have to wait and see” she added.
