Motorcycle Garda Injured Following Cork Chase

MOTORCYCLE GARDA INJURED FOLLOWING CORK CHASE

Two men have been arrested in Cork after a Garda was injured in the course of a chase of a stolen van this morning.

A stolen van suspected of having been involved in a number of burglaries in Cork yesterday was spotted by gardai in the Douglas shortly before 8am this morning.

The driver failed to stop when signalled to do so and in the course of the following chase the stolen van rammed a garda van and a number of other vehicles near Merchant’s Quay in the city centre before travelling out along the Mallow Road.

It then collided with a motorcycle Garda before being stopped near Blarney.

Two men in their 20s were arrested and taken to Gurranabraher garda station for questioning.

Officers also recovered an amount of stolen goods from the back of the stolen van.

The motorcycle garda who was hit suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Cork University Hospital by ambulance.

Billy Magill is a photographer and journalist who was at the scene. He has been speaking to Red FM.

“The bike is just lying on its side by him…I’d say it was just basically rammed from what I can gather” he said.

“They were all in pursuit – I counted approximately 13 when I first came across them and I would say one to five more at different stages, so anything up to perhaps 18, 20 police vehicles had been involved in the chase” he added.
