NEW HIQA REPORT AT ARAS ATTRACTA FINDS ONGOING PROBLEMS

A new report from HIQA into Aras Attracta in County Mayo has found ongoing problems with standards of care at the facility.

The centre for people with intellectual disabilities featured in an undercover Prime Time documentary last December.

The latest unannounced inspection at Aras Attracta in January found evidence of “good practice”, but a significant level of non-compliance with standards.

It highlighted issues surrounding patient privacy, staffing levels and procedures for evacuating residents in the event of a fire.

Some parts of centre 2, which featured in the TV documentary, were found not to be clean, suitably decorated or well maintained.

The report also found that some staff members were “not clear about what constituted abuse”, and that inspectors found that some staff “did not interact with residents in an appropriate manner”.

HIQA also found that aspects of medication management practices in Centre 2 were unsafe.
