Mental health services in North Wexford are set to receive a significant boost with the appointment of an additional consultant psychiatrist for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).
The update was provided to Wexford TD Malcolm Byrne in response to a Parliamentary Question submitted to the Minister for Health seeking progress on expanding CAMHS services in the region.
In its response, the HSE said it remains committed to strengthening Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in North Wexford and confirmed that work is ongoing to increase capacity within the existing service.
A consultant psychiatrist has now been identified and is expected to begin work in a locum capacity in or around early September, subject to final arrangements.
According to the HSE, the additional consultant will increase clinical capacity and provide extra support to existing CAMHS teams serving North Wexford.
The HSE also confirmed that some staff currently based in Enniscorthy are contractually assigned to support service delivery in Gorey, a move that will allow the CAMHS team to work more effectively within the Gorey catchment area.
The update comes amid ongoing concerns over waiting times and access to mental health services for children and young people across North Wexford, with the HSE stating it is committed to continuing the development of CAMHS services in the region.
