A Wexford TD has called on the Government to provide greater certainty for adults with intellectual disabilities and their families.
Speaking in the Dáil, Deputy George Lawlor has backed a motion calling for long-term planning to ensure people with intellectual disabilities have appropriate supports and accommodation in place before families reach crisis point.
During the debate, Deputy Lawlor spoke about one of his constituents, Jane Johnston, and her sons Evan and Daniel, saying families deserve dignity, certainty and a clear plan for the future.
He said too many ageing parents live with the constant worry of who will care for their loved ones when they are no longer able to do so, adding that the State must move away from reacting only when a crisis occurs.
