Cabinet approves draft bill which will affect new ross port
The Cabinet has approved the draft General Scheme of a new Bill with important implications for Ireland’s and Wexford's port sector. The main purpose of the Harbours (Amendment) Bill 2014 is to provide the necessary amendments to allow for a later transfer of the ports in Drogheda, Dún Laoghaire, Galway, New Ross and Wicklow to local authority ownership. Rosslare Europort - which is a business unit of Iarnród Éireann - is also a designated Port of National Significance but as it is not subject to the Harbours Acts the new Bill will not affect it. The second major theme of the Bill is to further improve the board selection and appointment process to the Ports of National Significance at Dublin, Cork, Shannon Foynes and Waterford. The draft Bill will now be sent to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications for consideration.
