The Save Lady’s Island Lake Campaign Group has urged urgent action to address what it describes as a continuing ecological crisis at Lady’s Island Lake in County Wexford.
The group presented its concerns to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate, Environment and Energy during a meeting held in Wexford, attended by TDs and Senators including local representatives Senator Cathal Byrne, Deputy Malcolm Byrne, Deputy George Lawlor and Deputy Johnny Mythen.
The campaign group highlighted long-term environmental decline at the coastal lagoon, pointing to nutrient pollution and biodiversity loss as key issues affecting the site.
They called for a clear, time-bound action plan to restore and protect the lake, saying that while engagement with local authorities and the Strategic Oversight Group has been welcomed, progress on delivering concrete measures has been too slow.
It was noted that an official action plan has still not been published nearly a year after the committee’s previous engagement on the issue.
Following the formal session, members of the committee joined the campaign group for a site visit to Lady’s Island Lake, where they were shown the environmental challenges facing the area and held discussions with local stakeholders.
Speaking after the meeting, campaign spokesperson Peadar McDonald said the visit allowed for “meaningful dialogue” on the urgent actions needed, but stressed that delivery of a clear action plan is now critical.
The group is continuing to call for greater transparency on water quality data and remedial measures, warning that delays risk further environmental decline at the important Wexford ecological site.
