Ahead of the Easter weekend, the Irish Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland and the RNLI are jointly urging the public to prioritize water safety when visiting the coast or engaging in water-based activities.
With the busy holiday period approaching, the organizations are calling for simple safety precautions and reminding people to keep an eye on the weather forecast, as conditions can change quickly.
Those planning to use kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, small motorboats, or sailing dinghies are advised to "Plan and Prepare" by following the Code of Practice for the Safe Operation of Recreational Craft, which is available on the Safety on the Water website.
Despite the Easter season, water temperatures remain cold, significantly increasing the risk of cold-water shock and hypothermia, even for those who may accidentally fall into the water. To stay safe, the following advice is recommended:
- Check the weather, wind, and tide times before heading out on the water.
- Wear an appropriate lifejacket, including when fishing from shore.
- Operate your craft at a safe speed, keeping in mind the weather and other water users.
- Inform someone on shore of your plans and expected return time.
- Carry a means of calling for help, such as a mobile phone or distress beacon.
- Get the proper training for your craft, ensuring you are prepared for emergencies.
- If you see someone in distress or suspect someone is in trouble, immediately use marine VHF radio Channel 16 or dial 112 to contact the Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland and the RNLI are encouraging everyone to take these precautions seriously to ensure a safe and enjoyable Easter weekend on or near the water.
