Eight New Special Classes Announced for Wexford Schools

Wexford’s educational system is set to receive a significant boost with the confirmation of eight new special classes across various local schools.

The announcement was made by Fianna Fáil TD Malcolm Byrne, who welcomed the additional educational supports aimed at enhancing inclusivity for students with special needs. The schools benefiting from these newly allocated classes are:

  • Danescastle National School
  • Oylegate National School
  • St. Garvans National School
  • Boolavogue National School
  • F.C.J. Secondary School (with a second special class announced as part of this tranche, following the first class approved earlier)
  • St. Mary’s C.B.S.
  • Gorey Educate Together Secondary School
  • Scoil Mhuire Na Naird

This announcement is part of the Seventh phase of national approvals for special classes for the 2026-2027 school year, with an additional 36 classes sanctioned across the country. Wexford's allocation will ensure that these schools can expand their capacity to support students with diverse educational needs.

TD Malcolm Byrne praised the initiative, saying, “These extra classes will make it easier for more students to access the supports they need within their own communities. It’s essential that our education system continues to evolve to meet changing needs, ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed. Strong local provision plays a key role in that progress.”

The addition of these special classes will strengthen Wexford’s commitment to inclusivity and offer students more opportunities to thrive within the local school system. With a total of 464 new special classes approved nationwide so far this year, more decisions are expected in the coming weeks, further bolstering the educational landscape for students with special needs across Ireland.
