Flood Defence Measures for Wexford to Be in Place by October

Wexford County Council has confirmed that interim flood defence measures will be in place across the county by October, following a €2.6 million funding allocation from the Office of Public Works.

The announcement comes after significant flooding earlier this year during Storm Chandra, which caused widespread damage and disruption, particularly in vulnerable areas. Enniscorthy remains one of the most at-risk towns, with a long history of flooding dating back to the 1920s.

Chief Executive of Wexford County Council, Eddie Taaffe, told an Oireachtas committee that the scale of the recent flooding highlighted the urgent need for both short-term protections and long-term solutions. He said the interim works will focus on reducing immediate risk to homes and businesses while more permanent flood relief schemes continue to progress.

The council says the measures are part of a broader strategy to strengthen flood resilience in the county, as extreme weather events become more frequent and severe.
