People in Wexford are being encouraged to seek advice and support if they have concerns about the welfare of an older person, as part of events marking World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
The HSE Adult Safeguarding Team will host an information and drop-in stand at Grants Pharmacy on Rafter Street in Enniscorthy on Friday, June 12, from 9am to 4pm.
The initiative forms part of a wider campaign across the South East aimed at raising awareness of elder abuse and ensuring older people know that help and support are available.
Members of the HSE Safeguarding Team will be on hand throughout the day to provide information, guidance and advice to older people, family members, carers and members of the public who may have concerns about abuse, neglect, mistreatment or inadequate care.
A private consultation space will also be available for anyone wishing to speak confidentially with a safeguarding professional about a specific concern.
Rob O'Connor, Principal Social Worker with the HSE Adult Safeguarding Team in the South East, said the initiative is designed to make support services more accessible within local communities.
He said many people may find it difficult or intimidating to seek help through formal channels, and that hosting information stands in familiar community settings such as local pharmacies can make it easier for people to access support and advice.
Mr O'Connor encouraged anyone concerned about the wellbeing of an older person to call into the Enniscorthy event, speak with members of the safeguarding team and learn more about the supports available.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day highlights the right of every older person to live free from abuse, neglect and mistreatment.
Anyone seeking advice or support can also contact the HSE South East Safeguarding Team on its Freephone number, 0818 101 101.
