A major investigation is underway following the death of 46-year-old Wexford man Colm Connolly at the Midlands Prison on Wednesday.
Mr Connolly, from St. Catherine’s Estate in Murrintown, had been moved to a padded close observation cell after a volatile exchange with prison officers.
Gardai, the Irish Prison Service, and the Office of the Inspector of Prisons have all launched separate inquiries.
Colm Connolly, who had known psychiatric issues, was serving time for several offences, including criminal damage and assault.
He was found unresponsive in the cell shortly after being restrained.
The circumstances of his death are still under investigation.
