New Ross Boat Club Exploring Options After Barrow Pontoon Damaged By Storms

A survey will be carried out on the New Ross pontoon after the floating dock was damaged by the recent storms.

The wooden infrastructure provides a base for water rescue and emergency responses on the River Barrow, including interventions involving people in distress at New Ross Bridge.

New Ross Boat Club also uses the pontoon to launch the club's boats and it's now looking at its options.

A review of the damage will be carried out over the next few weeks and a financial assessment will be made determining how much it will cost to get the pontoon back into use.

It's a huge blow for the club which is celebrating it's 150th year in existence in 2026 and is currently exploring plans to expand it's operations in the town.

Wexford TD Verona Murphy is calling on "Wexford County Council, the Department responsible for marine matters and all relevant agencies and stakeholders to come together with the club to find a way forward."

Her call was backed up by local Independent Ireland councillor Michael Sheehan who says there must be "100 percent commitment to getting them back on the river ASAP".

That report was funded by the Local Democracy Reporting Scheme.
