North Wexford Fine Gael TD Brian Brennan has strongly criticized the government’s handling of the recent fuel protests and the broader crisis facing rural Ireland. Speaking about the disruptions that have affected his constituency, Brennan said that the government misread the situation and failed to act swiftly, leading to unnecessary frustration among farmers, hauliers and ordinary citizens.
In the wake of protests across the Wicklow and Wexford areas, Brennan stated that the government’s initial response was inadequate, particularly with the controversial decision to call in the army. "I absolutely believe that there was no need to involve the army," Brennan said. "The people protesting were doing so for very genuine reasons and their frustration had been building up for some time."
The protests were sparked by rising fuel prices, increased taxes and concerns over the government’s policies, which many in rural areas feel have been out of touch with their needs. Brennan emphasized that while the government failed to properly engage with those affected the message sent out in the media was poorly handled. "The PR response was wrong and it caused unnecessary tension," he said.
He also took issue with former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s comments that the agriculture sector was receiving too much support, while urban areas were bearing the burden. "This shows a total lack of understanding of the real challenges in rural Ireland," Brennan said. "It’s a stark example of how disconnected the government has become from the realities faced by working people outside of our cities."
In response to the handling of the crisis, Brennan called for better communication, more engagement with affected communities and a shift in government policy to address the needs of rural Ireland. He stressed that rural communities deserve more than token gestures—they need real action, particularly when it comes to fuel costs, taxes and supporting local economies.
