There were 538 cases of homelessness recorded in County Wexford last year. The provision of emergency accomodation for the people involved cost Wexford County Council in the region of 350,000 euro. Wexford Fianna Fail County Councillor Malcolm Byrne is calling for cross party agreement to work out effective solutions for homeless people. The general election candidate said the cost to the council had to be spent in a number of areas: "That obviously includes support for hostel work that's done with Focus Ireland but also...almost 117,000 (euro) on emergency accomodation so there is a very significant cost to this." he said. "But apart from the financial costs there's obviously the very serious personal, difficult circumstances for all of those that are affected." he added.
