Paddy Power reviews future of up to 100 betting shops with Wexford outlets potentially affected

Paddy Power is to review the future of up to 100 of its betting shops across Ireland and the UK, putting up to 400 jobs at risk.

The bookmaker currently operates five shops across County Wexford, with three in Wexford town, one in New Ross and one in Gorey.It is not yet known if any of the Wexford outlets will be affected by the proposed closures, or how many local staff could be impacted.

Paddy Power’s parent company, Flutter, says the high street trading environment has been challenging for a number of years, citing rising costs, increased competition, economic uncertainty and a continued shift towards online betting.

The company also says higher gambling taxes are having a significant impact on its business.The announcement follows the closure of 28 Paddy Power shops in the Republic of Ireland last year.

Flutter says workers affected by the latest review will be offered redeployment opportunities where possible, with supporting staff its immediate priority.The company has not yet confirmed which individual shops could be affected, with the review now underway.
