Significant developments in neurological care in Wexford have been welcomed, alongside renewed calls for further investment in community supports across the region.
Following a sustained awareness campaign, funding has now been secured for a consultant neurologist post in Wexford. The move has been described as a major step forward for patients in the county and a strong example of what can be achieved through public advocacy and engagement.
The Neurological Alliance of Ireland said the development reflects the impact of consistent campaigning and community support. CEO Magdalen Rogers welcomed the progress, noting that while the appointment is a positive milestone, patients in the region will still rely on services outside the county for key diagnostic and specialist supports.
She highlighted that many individuals will continue to travel to Waterford for wraparound neurological services, including access to diagnostic testing. This, she said, underlines the ongoing importance of properly resourced regional hubs and the need for a strengthened “hub and spoke” model of care, as committed to in national health planning.
The Neurological Alliance of Ireland has also pointed out that the region is currently the only area in the country without a funded community neuro-rehabilitation team. This, they warn, places patients at a disadvantage compared to other parts of Ireland and can have knock-on effects on ongoing care and recovery.
The organisation has confirmed it will continue to raise the issue in advance of the upcoming budget, calling for investment to ensure equitable access to rehabilitation supports nationwide.
While the new consultant post represents clear progress for Wexford, campaigners say it also highlights the need for a more complete network of services - from diagnosis to rehabilitation - to ensure patients are not left behind depending on where they live.
