The Labour Leader says Ireland is now in a difficult political position in relation to water charges:
Howlin water Earlier, the European Commission said Ireland can't legally abolish its system of water charges under a EU directive. In a written statement to MEP Marian Harkin, the Commission says it is now clearly Ireland's "established practice" to impose domestic water charges. It says Ireland's derogation against water charges was lost at that point, and there is now no way under European directives that a previous practice can be restored
