A new national report has warned that thousands more homes across Ireland could be threatened by coastal erosion in the coming decades unless urgent action is taken.
Research published by the Climate Change Advisory Council estimates that almost 4,500 homes could be at risk by 2050, while hundreds of kilometres of roads are also vulnerable.
Experts say the true figure could be significantly higher, as many coastal counties were not included in earlier assessments.
The report is calling for a national coastal adaptation plan, including measures to protect communities, improve long-term planning and provide support for homeowners facing the impacts of climate change and rising sea levels.
