Water Conservation Order to Come into Effect Across Much of County Wexford

A Water Conservation Order will come into effect across large parts of County Wexford from Thursday as Uisce Éireann moves to protect water supplies during the current spell of warm weather.

The order will remain in place until August 26th and applies to the South Wexford, Gorey, South Regional and Bunclody water supply zones. It also covers the Greater Dublin Area, including Dublin, Wicklow and parts of Kildare and Meath.

The move comes as water consumption continues to increase, placing significant pressure on reservoirs and treatment plants.

Uisce Éireann has warned that demand typically rises during prolonged periods of warm weather, with more frequent showers, increased outdoor water use and greater demand from homes, businesses and agriculture.

The utility has previously said additional areas may have to come under overnight restrictions if consumption remains at current levels.

Households, businesses and farmers are being urged to conserve water by avoiding unnecessary use and repairing leaks where possible. Farmers are also being encouraged to follow water-saving advice to help reduce demand while the order is in place.

Uisce Éireann says the measures are necessary to help maintain water supplies for homes, businesses and essential services throughout the summer period.

Padraig Lyng, Water Operations Manager with Uisce Éireann, said:" Last week, we appealed to customers across Wexford to reduce non-essential water use. While many customers have responded and are making an effort to conserve water, demand remains exceptionally high and continues to outstrip the volume of water that can be treated and supplied in these areas.”

“Night-time restrictions are now required to protect daytime supplies and allow treated water reservoirs to recover overnight. Taking this action now will help safeguard water supplies for homes, businesses, farms and essential services across the affected communities.”

“We are asking everyone to continue playing their part by using water wisely and reducing non-essential use wherever possible. Every small action can collectively make a real difference during this period of exceptionally high demand.”

Uisce Éireann continues to actively manage water supplies across the county through measures including leakage reduction activities, pressure management, network operations and targeted repairs. Longer-term investment projects are also progressing to strengthen water infrastructure and improve resilience for communities across Wexford.
