The Irish Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland and RNLI are urging people to take care around water this June Bank Holiday weekend.
With warmer weather expected, large crowds are likely to head to beaches, lakes and rivers. However, despite the sunshine, water temperatures remain very cold and can be dangerous.
Even on warm days, water below 15 degrees can cause cold water shock — a sudden reaction that can lead to gasping, panic and loss of breathing control.
For many, this weekend may be their first swim of the year. People are being advised to enter the water slowly, keep swims short and stay within their depth. It’s also important not to swim alone and to always keep an eye on others.
Those planning activities on the water are reminded to check weather and tide conditions, wear a lifejacket, avoid alcohol and let someone know their plans.
If you get into difficulty in the water, the key advice is to “Float to Live” — stay calm, lean back, control your breathing and signal for help.
Anyone who spots someone in trouble is urged to call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.
