Housing commencements in County Wexford have already exceeded the total recorded for all of last year, according to the latest figures from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
The new data shows 78 homes were commenced in Wexford during June, a 26% increase on the same month last year, when 62 homes were started.
That brings the total number of homes commenced in the county to 602 during the first six months of 2026 – already surpassing the 563 homes commenced during the whole of 2025. The year-to-date figure also represents a 101% increase on the 299 homes commenced in Wexford during the first half of last year.
Nationally, 2,826 homes were commenced in June, more than double the figure recorded in June 2025, while 15,946 homes have been commenced across the country so far this year. That marks a 149% increase compared to the first half of 2025.
The figures build on what the Department describes as strong momentum in home building over the past two years, with 85,723 homes commenced during 2024 and 2025 combined, an increase of 43% compared with the previous two-year period.
Housing Minister and Wexford TD James Browne welcomed the latest figures, saying they reflected the urgency being placed on increasing housing delivery both locally and nationally.
He said it was "genuinely encouraging" to see the continued momentum in new home building, but stressed that the pace must continue, adding that he would continue using "every lever available" to accelerate delivery so that more people could access homes.
The latest data also highlights the growing use of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), with 80% of scheme housing and 37% of apartment developments commenced during the first half of the year intending to use MMC techniques. Minister Browne said the increased adoption of modern construction methods would help deliver homes more quickly while maintaining high quality standards.
Of the 78 homes commenced in Wexford during June, 25 were scheme dwellings, 22 were apartments and 31 were one-off homes.
