Wexford records fourth-highest burglary rate in Ireland despite national fall in break-ins

County Wexford recorded the fourth-highest burglary rate in Ireland last year, despite a significant drop in burglaries nationwide.

According to an analysis of Central Statistics Office crime figures, reported in the Irish Independent, there were 348 burglaries recorded in Wexford during 2025. That’s an 18 per cent increase on the previous year and the county’s highest total in five years.

The figures equate to 21 burglaries per 10,000 population, well above the national average of 16 per 10,000. Only Dublin, Wicklow and Louth recorded higher burglary rates.

The increase was largely driven by rises in Wexford’s three main urban centres.

Wexford town recorded 97 burglaries, up 47 per cent, while Enniscorthy saw a 48 per cent increase to 49 incidents. Gorey also experienced a significant rise, with burglaries increasing 38 per cent to 47.

Nationally, recorded burglaries fell by 13 per cent to 8,469 incidents, the lowest level in five years. Wexford was one of only four counties to buck that trend, alongside Dublin, Wicklow and Kerry.

Responding to the figures, An Garda Síochána highlighted the continued success of Operation Thor, the national initiative aimed at tackling burglary and organised crime.

Gardaí say the operation has contributed to a significant reduction in residential burglaries during recent winter campaigns, with targeted enforcement and crime prevention measures continuing during the summer months.
