SPORT: BILLY WALSH SPEAKS OUT ABOUT LEAVING IRISH BOXING SET-UP

Former Ireland head coach, Wexford man Billy Walsh, has spoken about how difficult he found it to leave the Irish high performance unit.

Following his controversial split from the Boxing Association, he is now helping the top US amateur fighters to try and qualify for Rio 2016.

But the Wexford town man says he still found it almost impossible to leave the Irish set-up:

“That team, I love that team and it took me, you know that 8 months, in that 8 months I spent many a night on my own crying…and the thoughts of it and I knew then when I was going, I knew, I spent days and days…I just used to break down in tears thinking about leaving” he said.

“Because it was like…it is your family and it was part of your family and….it’s been a very difficult move to make” he added.
