282 Cases Of Alleged Garda Misconduct Being Reviewed

282 CASES OF ALLEGED GARDA MISCONDUCT BEING REVIEWED

The Justice Minister has revealed that 282 cases of alleged misconduct by gardai are now being reviewed – that’s higher than originally thought.

Two senior and five junior counsel are independently reviewing the claims by whistleblowers and others. They will then make recommendations to Frances Fitzgerald.

It could lead to a commission of inquiry, but Minister Fitzgerald has signalled that in many cases no wrongdoing may be found.

“I would say at the outset that in this regard – without in any way prejudging the outcome of any individual case – that in some cases, perhaps a majority of cases, there maybe a decision that no further action is recommended” she said.

“However, that might be in cases where all court efforts have been exhausted or there’s been a full examination by a number of relevant bodies” she added.
