Man Shot In Limerick Understood To Be Well-known Convicted Criminal

MAN SHOT IN LIMERICK UNDERSTOOD TO BE WELL-KNOWN CONVICTED CRIMINAL

A man has been shot and critically wounded in Limerick this morning.

It is understood the victim (54) is well-known convicted criminal Christy Keane.

He was shot when two armed and masked men approached him and opened fire as he parked his car in the grounds of the University of Limerick at 6:50am this morning.

The men left the scene in a car which was found burned out a short distance away.

The scene has been preserved for a technical and forensic examination.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.

Reporter in Limerick David Raleigh says Mr Keane was going to the the gym in UL when the attack happened:

“The UL gym also hosts some of the world’s top athletes – it’s the home training ground for the Munster Rugby Team as well” he said.

“But Mr Keane he has a criminal background which led to this feud in Limerick, which rocked the city for over 11, 12 years”.

“It led to gardaí maintaining a 24 hour presence in St Mary’s Park, where Mr Keane is from, over a number of years” he added.
