AOIFE WINTERLICH’S MOTHER THANKS ALL WHO TRIED TO SAVE HER

The mother of a 14 year old girl who lost her life after a failed attempt by Waterford Coastguard to rescue her from the sea at Hook Head on December 6th 2014 has thanked all concerned.

Aoife Winterlich was with a sea scouting group when she got in to difficulty and was swept out to sea.

One of her friends Philip Byrne jumped in to save but he too got in to difficulty.

Waterford Coastguard helicopter arrived and managed to winch both casualties out of the water, but Aoife who was unconscious slipped from her harness and fell 40 feet back in to the water.

The young girl died five days later in Hospital.

Yesterday at the Coroners Court yesterday Aoife’s mother Ann Winterlich paid tribute to the rescue services and Philip who jumped in and tried to rescue her.

Mrs Winterlich said that because of the quick thinking of all concerned Aoife’s family had time to say good by to their precious daughter.
