BERTIE AHERN AND ENDA KENNY TO BE CALLED BEFORE BANKING INQUIRY

Taoiseach Enda Kenny and former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern are to be called to give evidence at the Oireachtas Banking Inquiry.

Enda Kenny will be consulted about his financial policies as an opposition leader, while Bertie Ahern will be questioned on economic policy during his tenure.

Other politicians who have made the list include Richard Bruton, Joan Burton, Mary Harney and Eamon Ryan.

Meanwhile up to ten bankers from the former Anglo Irish Bank are also to be called.

The banking inquiry is due to be complete by November.

Group political correspondent with Independent Newspapers, Daniel McConnell, says that if any proposed witnesses have to be compelled to appear, it will put the committee under real time pressure.

“There is little enough room for any sort of unforeseen difficulties – legal or otherwise” he said.

“There is also the added difficulty that we are now hearing a lot of talk of an early election – there is an increased suggestion that the government might pull the plug on the government after the budget – which could really put the inquiry under pressure” he added.
