Cabinet To Discuss Removing 1 And 2 Cent Coins From Circulation

CABINET TO DISCUSS REMOVING 1 AND 2 CENT COINS FROM CIRCULATION

The Cabinet discussed getting rid of the 1 and 2 cent coins this morning.

Ministers looked at a report from the Central Bank on the ’rounding’ trial run in Wexford two years ago.

If the government goes ahead with the scheme, Ireland will be the sixth EU country to phase out the coppers.

Public Expenditure Minster Brendan Howlin says he is in favour of removing the 1 and 2 cent coins from circulation.

“We’ve tried it in Wexford, you probably know, that’s where it was practiced – so I’m used to rounding up and down the change and I think it’s a good idea” he said.

“For most people, I think most of us throw the one cents into a jar, dispose of it at the end – so I think it’s a weight in our pockets that we don’t need” he added.
