COUNTY WEXFORD ONE OF THE HIGHEST INCIDENCE OF TREATMENT FOR ALCOHOL ABUSE

It’s emerged County Wexford has one of the highest incidence of treatment for problems with alcohol abuse in the country.

That’s according to figures released by the Health Research Board which were published today.

Other counties to feature high on the list in relation to alcohol problems include; Waterford, Donegal and Sligo.

The HRB says many of those in treatment for problem alcohol use started drinking alcohol at 16, with almost no change seen over the past five years.

Alcohol Action Ireland says it’s very concerned that consumption is beginning earlier in childhood.

But Communications Officer with the group – Wexford man Conor Cullen – says we should’nt be all that surprised.

“There’s nothing to be gained at pointing the finger at young people – we need to acknowledge that young people generally model their drinking behaviour on the attitudes and actions of the adults they see around them – as well as being influenced by other factors such as alcohol marketing” he said.

“But when it comes to drinking, you people are – in many ways – a product of their environment; and in Ireland we have created an environment for them that’s saturated in alcohol” he added.
