GAY COUPLES MAY NOT HAVE RIGHT TO ADOPT UNTIL AFTER REFERENDUM

Gay couples may not have the right to adopt until after the referendum on same-sex marriage.

That’s despite being granted that right under the Children * Family Relationships Act signed into law last week.

The law gives same-sex couples the right to be considered for adoption – but only when the government is capable of offering it.

The Department of Children * Youth Affairs says it hasn’t yet set a date for the relevant new laws to kick in.

That means the legislation may not have taken effect before the referendum on May 22nd.
