HOWLIN SAYS ‘COMPREHENSIVE EXPOSE’ OVER MOTHER AND BABY HOMES NEEDED

The Public Expenditure Minister says there needs to be a “comprehensive exposé” of what happened in the mother and baby homes.

The cabinet is expected to agree on a full inquiry into the care homes – a number of which were located around the country from the 1920s to the 1980s.

Brendan Howlin says it is another moment of Ireland’s “dark past” that’s been uncovered.

“The range of issues that have emerged in the last couple of weeks I think have shocked all of us” he said.

“We thought we reneured to some of our dark past and what happened – particualrly as they affected children in this country in the early years if the State”.

“So we need to have a comprehensive analysis of what’s happened – an expose of what’s happened” he added.
