INDEPENDENT INQUIRY INTO CLAIMS OF BUGGING AT GSOC ANNOUNCED

The Government has announced an independent inquiry into the claims of bugging at the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission.

A retired judge will examine the issues.

Meanwhile the Justice Committee is to look at the powers of GSOC and if new legislation is needed.

Both sides of the coalition were unhappy at the daily revelations and felt there was a need to draw a line under the situation.

So the Cabinet’s agreed that a retired High Court Judge will be asked to conduct an inquiry and to bring clarity to the revelations of recent weeks.

The exact terms of reference have still to be decided but the Government says these will be to ensure credibility and trust are restored to all involved.

Separately the Justice Committee of the Oireachtas is being asked to look at the legislation around GSOC and to see if it can be enhanced.
