NEW PROPOSALS TO TAKE THE HEAT OUT OF LEAVING CERT ‘POINTS RACE’

New proposals to take the heat out of the Leaving Cert ‘points race’ have emerged.

They include widening the gap between the number awarded for honours and pass grades.

And students could also earn points for failing, if they sit a higher level paper.

Guidance Counsellor Brian Mooney is not sure that is fair on other teens taking their exams:

“If we continuously create more sub-groups who we make concessions to, ultimately at the end of the day – unless you’re increasing the number of places available – other people are getting shoved out of place” he said.

“I’m just verbalising something that, as I see all of these various schemes multiplying year on year, we need to be careful of – that’s all I’m saying” he added.
