New Ross Road Haulage Firm Loses Appeal Over Fatal Road Accident

NEW ROSS ROAD HAULAGE FIRM LOSES APPEAL OVER FATAL ROAD ACCIDENT

A New Ross road haulage firm has lost its appeal in relation to a road accident which claimed the lives of two people in 2007.

Roadteam Logistic Solutions, formerly known as Nolan Transport, had appealed the severity of the 1 million euro fine, previously imposed by Wexford Circuit Criminal Court.

The case involved the inadequate securing of steel coils which slid off a trailer killing two motorists at a bend in the road near Thomastown in County Kilkenny on July 19th 2007.

Yesterday’s sitting of the Court of Appeal heard the coils weighed 25 tonnes and were placed on crates on the lorry.

Nolan Transport had pleaded guilty to breaching the Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act and were fined 1 million euro at Wexford Circuit Criminal Court on February 25th 2013.

The maximum fine was 3 million euro.

The now named Roadteam lost its case at the Court of appeal yesterday with the court holding that the fine was just and proportionate.
