A sister’s fight for life brings a family together in hope

Níamh and Eímear Byrne are sisters and primary school teachers, united now by an urgent medical journey and a determined appeal to support life-saving treatment abroad.

Eímear, 30, has lived with a rare connective tissue disorder since childhood. Her journey has been marked by serious health challenges, beginning with her first open-heart surgery at just ten years old. Despite this, she pursued her dream career in teaching and eventually returned to the classroom after years of recovery and rehabilitation.

Three years ago, Eímear’s condition became critical when an aneurysm ruptured, requiring emergency open-heart surgery. During the procedure, she suffered severe complications, including a stroke, and had to relearn how to walk, talk, and manage daily life. Through extraordinary determination and rehabilitation, she made a remarkable recovery and returned to teaching.

More recently, doctors discovered three new aneurysms. Eímear now requires a third, highly complex open-heart surgery. Due to the risks involved, the procedure must take place in a specialist hospital in the United States with expertise in her rare condition.

The surgery offers the best chance of survival and aims to reduce the risk of further life-changing complications, including another stroke. However, the cost of treatment and recovery is far beyond what the family can manage alone.

Níamh has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help fund the journey, treatment, and recovery, with the hope of giving her sister every possible chance to return to health — and to the classroom she loves.

The family’s message is one of gratitude and quiet strength, reflected in the Irish saying:

“Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine”
(Under the shelter of each other, people survive)
