The emergency department at Wexford General Hospital is currently experiencing significant pressure, with high numbers of patients attending and some requiring admission for ongoing treatment.
Hospital management has advised that people presenting for routine or non-urgent care may face longer waiting times while emergency cases continue to be prioritised.
The HSE is encouraging members of the public to consider alternative healthcare services where suitable, including their GP, GP Out of Hours services and local community pharmacists.
The hospital has apologised for delays and acknowledged the impact extended waiting times may have on patients and families during this busy period.
All beds at Wexford General Hospital are currently in use, and staff say every effort is being made to manage patient flow and ensure those requiring admission are accommodated as quickly as possible.
Community pharmacists can provide advice and treatment for a range of minor illnesses. Under the HSE’s Common Conditions Service, pharmacists can also provide certain prescription-only medications without patients needing to visit a GP.
Conditions covered include allergic rhinitis, cold sores, conjunctivitis, impetigo, oral thrush, shingles, uncomplicated urinary tract infections and vaginal thrush.
The HSE has reiterated that the emergency department remains available for patients who are seriously unwell or experiencing a medical emergency, with the sickest patients continuing to be seen first.
