There are growing concerns among residents and businesses over the planned summer closure of the Ferry Bridge at Mountgarrett, a key link between South Kilkenny and New Ross.
The route is due to close from June 24th until August 28th, a move that locals say could cause major disruption during one of the busiest times of the year. The bridge is a vital crossing point for commuters, shoppers and commercial traffic travelling between the two areas.
Residents have criticised what they describe as a lack of consultation ahead of the decision, along with the absence of a clear traffic management or alternative access plan during the closure period.
Local resident David Maher says the impact could be significant, particularly for businesses in nearby New Ross.
Speaking about the situation, he said:
“Kilkenny County Council issued a statement on the 29th of April. It’s very serious because they’re planning on closing this bridge for two months solid. There’s been no public consultation so I mean, what I really want getting out to the Wexford listeners is the New Ross area, because a lot of businesses in New Ross, it’s only three kilometres, three and a half kilometres from New Ross and most of the people that live there I would suggest would do their daily business in New Ross.Well from the business people I’ve spoken to, they didn’t realise this was closing.”
Concerns are also being raised about the knock-on effects for daily travel, including longer journey times, increased congestion on alternative routes, and reduced footfall for local traders.
Calls are now growing for both Kilkenny County Council and relevant authorities to provide clearer communication, engage directly with affected communities, and outline detailed traffic arrangements well in advance of the planned shutdown.
