The family of Wexford woman Claire Cullen, who was killed in a hit-and-run incident in the Dominican Republic, are continuing their call for justice as they seek accountability for those responsible.
Ms Cullen, from Gorey, had travelled abroad to attend her brother’s wedding when the incident occurred approximately five months ago. She is survived by her husband Ronan and their three children.
Described as “the heartbeat of two families”, her sudden death has left a profound void in the close-knit community of Riverchapel and beyond.
The case was raised in the Dáil this week by TD Brian Brennan, who described Ms Cullen’s death as “a tragic case” and outlined the devastating impact on her family.
He told the chamber that Ms Cullen was “an extremely kind, popular and talented young woman”, adding that her loss has deeply affected all who knew her.
Deputy Brennan also acknowledged the efforts made to return Ms Cullen home, saying her family appreciated the support of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, the Irish Consulate and the Department of Foreign Affairs during the repatriation process.
However, he stressed that the family’s focus now is on justice.
“As the family are based here in Ireland, they are seeking assurances from the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Irish Government that all possible efforts will be made to assist them in their pursuit of justice,” he said.
He added that the situation represents “every family’s worst nightmare” and emphasised that securing accountability for those responsible is what Ms Cullen’s family deserves.
