The Heritage Council has announced the expansion of its successful Heritage in Schools programme to post-primary schools, with students in County Wexford set to benefit from the initiative.
The programme, which has been running in primary schools since 2000, will now be extended to Junior Cycle, Senior Cycle and Transition Year students from 2027, offering workshops linked to subjects including history, geography, Gaeilge, science and the arts.
As part of the expansion, up to 100 heritage practitioners nationwide are being recruited across disciplines such as archaeology, ecology, folklore, geology, traditional crafts and music. Successful applicants will deliver workshops in schools, on school grounds, or at local heritage sites.
The Heritage Council says the initiative is designed to give students hands-on engagement with Ireland’s natural, built and cultural heritage while supporting classroom learning.
Applications are open now, with a deadline of July 6th, and an information webinar will take place on June 5th.
