IBI Calls for Intervention Over 39% Levy Increase Impacting Independent Radio

Michael Kelly, Chief Executive of the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland (IBI), has voiced strong concerns over a 39% increase in the broadcast levy that is set to impact the independent radio sector this year. Kelly acknowledged that while the levy is essential for funding Coimisún na Meán, he questioned why the independent radio sector is shouldering the majority of this substantial hike.

He stressed that the independent radio sector is unique in that it relies entirely on advertising revenue, making it particularly vulnerable to increased costs. He pointed out that, although Coimisún Na Meán has contributed funding through initiatives like the Sound and Vision scheme, the new levy increase could outweigh these contributions, leaving stations with fewer resources to improve services and maintain operations.

The 39% increase, which amounts to an additional €1 million across the radio sector, will place immense financial pressure on many independent stations. Kelly expressed frustration that the levy was introduced without prior consultation or sufficient warning, leaving broadcasters struggling to adjust.

Kelly has urged Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Patrick O'Donovan, to intervene and prevent the levy increase from going ahead.
