New figures show that marriage habits in Wexford have changed significantly in recent decades, with non-religious ceremonies now outnumbering traditional church weddings.
Statistics from last year reveal there were 713 marriages recorded in County Wexford. Of those, 267 ceremonies were non-religious, representing 37.2 % of all weddings in the county.
Meanwhile, 217 couples chose Catholic ceremonies, accounting for just over 30% of marriages.
The local figures closely reflect national trends, where non-religious ceremonies now account for more than 40% of weddings nationwide, compared to just under 30% for Catholic ceremonies.
The data also shows that same-sex marriages remain a small proportion of ceremonies in the county, with four recorded in Wexford last year.
The changing figures highlight how couples are increasingly opting for hotels, civil venues and outdoor locations rather than traditional church settings for their wedding celebrations.
