South East Technological University (SETU) has highlighted the transformative role of inclusive higher education at a special Foundation Day event in Wexford.
The celebration, titled “Making Impact on Society – Empowering People and Communities”, was held at the National Opera House and focused on how higher education can create opportunities, support communities, and drive social inclusion across the southeast.
Professor Veronica Campbell, President of SETU, emphasised the University’s mission: “We aim to be a transformative force in higher education, locally rooted and globally connected, driving innovation, inclusion, and impact across the region and beyond.” She added that the event reflected SETU’s ongoing commitment to empowering people through accessible education and fostering opportunities that respond to real societal needs.
Keynote speaker Dr Louise Callinan, Head of Access Policy at the Higher Education Authority, praised SETU for supporting underrepresented and disadvantaged students. “SETU has pioneered exemplary initiatives in partnership with the community, ensuring successful graduate outcomes and empowering inclusive approaches across the region,” she said.
Deputy Verona Murphy T.D., Ireland’s first female Ceann Comhairle and an SETU graduate, participated in a panel discussion on education, inclusion, and leadership. Students Emma Sparkes and Amy Roche shared how SETU’s award-winning Certificate in Personal Development programme has enhanced their confidence, personal growth, and career prospects.
The panel, chaired by Dr Richard Hayes, Vice President for Strategy at SETU, featured contributions from leaders across the university and the Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board. Guests also enjoyed an art exhibition celebrating community, inclusion, and creativity.
This month, SETU is hosting a series of Foundation Day events across Waterford, Wexford, and Carlow, marking four years of the “Making Impact” initiative since the University’s establishment in 2022. The final event takes place in Carlow on Friday, 15 May.
