Wexford General Hospital has temporarily restricted visitors to Mary’s Ward to reduce the risk of Norovirus spreading among patients and staff. Visiting will only be permitted for compassionate reasons, with approval from the Ward Manager and all visitors are required to wear a mask while on the ward.
Norovirus is highly contagious and is one of the most common causes of gastroenteritis in Ireland, leading to sudden vomiting and diarrhoea. While most people recover within a few days, it can be more serious for older adults, young children and those with underlying health conditions.
The hospital asks that anyone experiencing symptoms stay at home, avoid attending hospitals or care facilities for at least 48 hours after recovery and maintain strict hand hygiene. Contaminated surfaces, clothing and bedding should be cleaned thoroughly and food preparation should be avoided during illness and for two days after recovery.
