Wexford Farmer Urges Urgent Action as Coastal Erosion Threatens Homes and Businesses

A local farmer in Ballyhealy, Co. Wexford is calling for immediate government intervention to tackle escalating coastal erosion that is threatening his property and the homes of many others in the area.

Johnny Fortune, who has spent over €100,000 of his & his brother's money to install protective rocks along the shoreline, is facing the relentless impact of winter storms and rising sea levels, which have already caused significant damage.

In the last year alone, the beach near Johnny’s property has eroded by up to 15 meters, endangering his home, his farm and the homes of other residents. The beach, a well-known destination for holidaymakers has been steadily losing ground and the lack of proper coastal protection is only accelerating the problem.

Despite the financial strain, Johnny has taken matters into his own hands, purchasing rocks and hiring contractors to lay them in the spring of 2025. While these efforts have slowed the erosion slightly, the damage to the coastline continues. The beach, which was once stable, now faces an uncertain future with storms causing more severe land loss.

The area, primarily low-lying, is at high risk. If the erosion continues, it could soon reach the homes located just above the beach, placing another 10-12 houses in immediate danger.

The issue is not just about the safety of land; it also impacts the local economy. Johnny employs over 10 people year-round, many of whom live locally and depend on his farm. His farm, which specializes in potatoes, also contributes significantly to the local economy. But as input costs rise and revenue stagnates, he finds it increasingly difficult to fund ongoing protection efforts on his own.

Despite these challenges, Johnny remains committed to his land and community. However, he is now calling on local authorities and the government to step in and provide the necessary support. "We need more help and we need it now," he says.
