Ahead of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day on May 17th, public libraries across Wexford have launched a tablet loan scheme in partnership with the Vodafone Foundation’s Hi Digital programme. The initiative aims to make digital skills training more accessible for older people, helping them gain confidence and stay connected in an increasingly digital world.
The tablets, available at Wexford Town, Gorey, Enniscorthy, Bunclody, and New Ross Libraries, come preloaded with the free Hi Digital course. The course offers short, easy-to-follow lessons on using smartphones, messaging apps like WhatsApp, avoiding online scams, and more. Participants can also access in-person support through workshops, Drop-In Fridays at Vodafone stores, and other library sessions.
Sabrina Casalta, CEO of Vodafone Ireland, said the initiative removes practical barriers to digital learning, while Dr Stuart Hamilton of the Local Government Management Agency highlighted how libraries provide a trusted, supportive environment for older learners. Yvonne Smith, Senior Executive Librarian at Wexford Library, added that the programme helps users feel confident, connected, and independent.
The scheme is free for library members and part of a wider effort that has already helped over 170,000 older people across Ireland since 2021. For more information or to find your nearest participating library, visit Hi Digital or call 1800 203030.
