Wexford Man Among Irish Citizens on Gaza Aid Flotilla Intercepted by Israel

Israel has intercepted a Gaza-bound aid flotilla carrying a Wexford man among those on board in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

Adam Fitzhenry from Bree is believed to be one of 15 Irish citizens taking part in the humanitarian mission.

The Global Sumud Flotilla says its fleet consists of around 50 boats carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza. Organisers say the vessels were approximately 250 nautical miles from Gaza when Israeli forces moved in and surrounded parts of the convoy.

Nine boats are reported to have been seized so far, although organisers have not yet confirmed whether any of their vessels were among those intercepted.

President Catherine Connolly's sister is among at least six Irish citizens on board a Gaza-bound aid flotilla who have been detained by Israel. Dr Margaret Connolly was sailing on the Blue Toys ship in the Global Sumud Flotilla when it was intercepted by Israeli forces off the coast of Cyprus. Organisers say 52 civilian boats carrying 461 volunteers from 45 countries have been intercepted so far.

Speaking to South East Radio News within the last few minutes, Adam’s sister Rebecca Fitzhenry says the family has not heard from him for more than two hours and are deeply concerned for the safety of everyone on board.

She says the family first learned of the interception early this morning through an official family group set up by organisers.

Rebecca says communication with Adam’s boat, the Amazon, has since been completely lost.

She says the crew were “peacefully trying to deliver humanitarian aid to the people of Palestine” and fears the loss of contact may mean the boat’s communications systems were intercepted.

Rebecca Fitzhenry is calling on the Irish Government to take immediate action to ensure the safe return of all Irish citizens involved.

She says family and friends have been sharing updates widely on social media while anxiously awaiting further information on the condition and whereabouts of those on board.
