An 11-year-old Wexford pupil has taken his concerns about gender equality in education directly to the Minister.
Alfie Kearney presented a letter to Education Minister Hildegarde Naughton at the ASTI conference in White’s Hotel recently, calling for equal access to subjects in secondary schools.
The sixth-class student says male-only schools not offering home economics reinforces outdated gender stereotypes.
The Minister accepted his letter, praised his initiative, and says she will look into the issue.
Speaking on Morning Mix, Alfie, who hopes to pursue cooking, says all students should have the same opportunities regardless of gender.
